Nowadays, things are duly turning around. As for The Island Princess, many critics animatedly discuss this tragicomedy; among them are some members of a seminar at the Shakespeare Association of America convention (Chicago, 2010), who regard this play as the key text to intervene critically in early modern studies. Jonathan Gil Harris, editor of Indography (2012) that is derived from the discussion at its eponymous seminar, states distinctly that The Island Princess is ‘an important instance of Indography’ (p. 7). Of the critical term ‘Indography’, he gives an explanation: ‘Like ethnography, Indography is as much a writing (and displacement) of the European self – in the case of this volume, the English self – as of the Indian, according to a photonegative logic of identity and difference similar to that subtending the phenomenon examined by Edward Said in Orientalism’ (p. 3). Richard Brome’s A Jovial Crew, on the other hand, is in more favourable condition. We have received the benefits of the Regents Renaissance Drama edition (Ann Haaker, ed., A Jovial Crew (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1968)), and now the indispensable Richard Brome Online (http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/brome/home.jsp) is freely available on the internet. To mention a comparatively recent criticism on Richard Brome, nothing is more brilliant and essential than Julie Sanders’s The Cultural Geography of Early Modern Drama, 1620-1650 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2011).
